Medical Assistant
Job Description
1. Patient Care and Clinical Support
Register patients and maintain an organized flow of clients at the health post.
Conduct triage, record vital signs, and perform MUAC screening for malnutrition.
Assist the Medical Officer during patient consultations, examinations, minor procedures, and emergency care.
Dispense prescribed medications and provide clear guidance on dosage and usage.
Deliver health education and counselling on hygiene, nutrition, disease prevention, and immunization.
Identify patients needing referral to higher-level facilities and assist in the referral process.
Support community outreach activities as required, including health awareness sessions.
2. NCD Screening and Prevention
Perform routine Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) screening for all eligible patients and community members, including blood pressure measurement (hypertension), random/fasting blood glucose testing (diabetes), BMI and waist circumference assessment (obesity), and other NCD risk factor screenings as per national or organizational protocols.
Identify individuals with abnormal NCD screening results, provide immediate basic counselling on lifestyle modifications (healthy diet, physical activity, tobacco and alcohol cessation), and refer confirmed or high-risk cases to the Medical Officer or higher-level facilities for diagnosis and management.
Maintain accurate NCD screening registers, records, and follow-up tracking; contribute to community-based NCD awareness campaigns and early detection activities.
3. Medicines, Supplies, and Infection Control
Assist in the safe and rational use of medicines under the Medical Officer’s guidance.
Maintain stock records for medicines, vaccines, and supplies; report shortages promptly.
Ensure proper storage and handling of medical supplies.
Maintain cleanliness and hygiene of the health post and patient care areas.
Follow infection prevention and control protocols, including waste management and sterilization of equipment.
4. Documentation and Reporting
Maintain accurate patient records, registers, and tally sheets.
Prepare and submit weekly and monthly health post reports on patient load, services provided, and health trends.
Uphold confidentiality and ethical standards regarding patient information.
5. Coordination and Teamwork
Collaborate with Medical Officer, health staff, volunteers, and community health workers for efficient service delivery.
Attend regular staff meetings and provide input on health post operations and community health trends.
Assist supervisors, sector representatives, and donors during field visits and monitoring exercises.
6. Accountability, Safeguarding
Provide care with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity.
Uphold safeguarding, PSEA (Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse), and gender-sensitive practices.
Promote equitable access to healthcare for all community members, including children, women, elderly, and persons with disabilities.
Respond professionally to community feedback and concerns, ensuring patient satisfaction and trust.
7. Any Other Duties
Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by the line manager or senior management that are in line with the role and organizational needs.
Experience
- 2 to 3 years
- The applicants should have experience in the following business area(s): NGO
Education
- Diploma in Medical
Diploma/Certificate in Medical Assistance from a recognized institution.
Valid registration with BMDC (Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council).
Additional Requirements
- Age 25 to 40 years
Minimum 2–3 years of experience as a medical assistant, paramedic, or in a similar clinical support role.
Experience working in camp settings, primary healthcare facilities, or with vulnerable populations is highly desirable.
Basic knowledge of primary healthcare, common illnesses, and first aid.
Ability to take vital signs, conduct MUAC screenings, and assist with minor procedures.
Understanding of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices.
Strong communication, counselling, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports.
Team-oriented with the capacity to work in humanitarian and emergency settings.
