Job Description

About Smart Air Bangladesh

Smart Air Bangladesh is a social business on a mission: making clean air accessible to everyone in Bangladesh through affordable technology, transparent data, and meaningful public engagement. We design and distribute high-quality, low-cost air purifiers and deploy air quality monitoring networks that put real data into the hands of communities, researchers, and policymakers. Founded as part of the global Smart Air network, our Dhaka team works lean, moves fast, and holds ourselves to the same standard we ask of the air: clear and honest.

Join us at Smart Air Bangladesh and play a pivotal role in building a cleaner, healthier future for Bangladesh!

About the Role

As part of a grant-funded project, we are expanding our air quality sensor network across Dhaka. The IoT Sensor Engineer plays a critical role in this expansion, holding primary responsibility for the technical installation and operational integrity of a hybrid air pollution monitoring network.

This involves leading physical installations at key project sites, managing mounting, power, and connectivity (WiFi and cellular SIM). The engineer will configure data transmission, verify cloud connectivity to OpenAQ, and manage a scheduled maintenance program including sensor cleaning and firmware updates.

Key tasks also include remote data quality monitoring, identifying sensor drift against reference baselines, and providing technical certification for data provenance used as legal evidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deploy and commission Air Quality Sensors at assigned sites- each installation fully operational, correctly oriented, and connected to the data network within agreed timelines.
  • Maintain a rigorous calibration schedule so that sensor accuracy is validated against reference instruments on a rolling basis and drift is corrected before it affects data quality.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment faults: power issues, sensor failures, and connectivity drops during site visits, minimizing data gaps and downtime.
  • Clean, validate, and flag anomalous data streams daily; deliver a weekly data-quality report that enables the team to act on findings with confidence.
  • Integrate sensor nodes via Wi-Fi and GSM protocols into cloud-based dashboards, ensuring seamless data flow and remote-monitoring capability.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance logs, calibration records, and site-condition notes so that every decision is traceable and audit-ready.
  • Proactively flag potential equipment failures before they result in data gaps, recommending preventive action to the Operations Manager.
  • Work in close partnership with the Sensor Technician to coordinate field interventions, schedule site visits, and ensure the seamless physical and technical execution of the monitoring network.

Experience

  • 2 to 5 years
  • The applicants should have experience in the following business area(s): Engineering Firms, Research Organization, Third Party Auditor (Quality, Health, Environment, Compliance, Technical Infrastructure

Education

    • Bachelor in Engineering (BEngg) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Electronics, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering
    • Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) in Computer Science & Engineering

Additional Requirements

  • Age 20 to 45 years
  • Working knowledge of electrochemical sensors and laser-based particulate sensors, including typical failure modes and calibration requirements.
  • Proficient in Excel and at least one scripting or data-analysis tool for data cleaning, validation, and visualization.
  • Familiar with IoT connectivity protocols (Wi-Fi, GSM) and basic cloud data pipeline concepts.
  • Physically fit and willingness to travel extensively throughout Dhaka via motorcycle or public transport.
  • Comfortable working in varied field conditions, including installing sensors to houses, roofs, or balconies, and outdoor sites in all weather in compliance with OHS protocols.
  • Detail-oriented with a structured approach to record-keeping; you do not consider a task done until the log entry is complete
  • Fluency in Bengali, advanced English speaking and writing for technical reporting is required.
